MATCH REPORT: Bradford City 0-0 Newport County

26 March 2022

For the second time this season, Newport County and Bradford played out a 0-0 draw.

Alex Gilliead had the first notable shot at goal, but it was only a half-chance, as his effort from range was deflected behind for a corner that County dealt with.

It was a similar story for the Exiles early on, as their first chance saw Finn Azaz cut inside his man and aim a shot goalwards that was also deflected behind for a corner that came to nothing.

Dom Telford had his first effort by flicking a cross by Cameron Norman from the right narrowly wide of the near post and soon after Telford had a shot deflected over from the middle of the box.

County's next two chances were both ambitious attempts from range, with Scot Bennett striking high and wide and Robbie Willmott having his half-volley claimed by Bradford keeper Alex Bass at the second attempt.

The half ended with Joe Day making a simple save to his left to keep out Jamie Walker's shot from the right of the area.

Both teams started the second half with intensity. Norman's shot was blocked away from danger after James Waite's low cross across goal didn't get the required touch.

A minute later, Day made a fine save low to his right to keep out Cooke and then he made a superb save to deny Walker in a one-on-one after Bradford broke from a Newport free-kick.

Newport had strong claims for a penalty just before the hour after Norman beat his man on the right of the box and went down but the referee waved play on. Aaron Lewis then struck a shot over the bar from 20 yards.

Just after the hour, Dion Pereira's low cross was flicked over by Cook and a minute later Gilliead headed a cross from the right across the face of goal and wide.

County had half an opening seven minutes from time, but Bass grabbed an attempted lob from Alex Fisher after Telford flicked the ball onto the second half Rob Street replacement.

Both teams were unable to find the killer winner though and had to settle for a point apeice.
