PRE-MATCH | Ed Upson: “Hopefully we can kick-start another good run now"

24 September 2021

Midfielder Ed Upson says Newport County AFC can begin another good run of form against Barrow AFC on Friday evening on the back of Saturday’s win against Walsall.

Upson wasn’t part of the matchday squad in midweek as the Exiles suffered a 1-0 loss against Northampton Town but returned to action in midfield to claim a first home league win against the Saddlers.

Manager Michael Flynn made eight changes to his midweek side and the sizeable squad rotation proved to pay off, leaving Flynn with a vast choice of selection ahead of the Exiles’ trip to Cumbria.

“It shows how good of a squad we have as well because we have a few different players playing in each game which shows our depth,” said Upson.

“I thought Saturday was really good, it was a great performance and result so hopefully we can kick-start another run now.”

Barrow currently sit 15th in the league and are without a home win since August with new manager Mark Cooper at the helm. The Bluebirds cancelled out Scot Bennett’s opener in the last meeting between the two when former Exile Jamie Devitt sealed the three points for the Cumbrian side.

“It’s going to be tough, but so is every game in this league. It’s going to be one of those where we’re going to have to impose ourselves on the game and not worry about the opposition too much. If we concentrate on our own game then hopefully that should see us through.”

“These trips are sometimes difficult because they’re so far away but there’s nothing you can do about it. We’ve just got to get our heads down, get as much sleep as we can on the bus and go again in the evening.”

Upson will make his 10th Exiles appearance on Friday, should he be involved in the matchday squad, and has settled into life at Newport with ease since arriving in the summer on a free transfer.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here so far, it’s a good club with good people. It’s been a decent start for me personally.”

“There’s always that bit of pressure when you join a new club but I’m not trying to be anyone else specifically I’m just trying to be myself so hopefully people like what I bring to the team.”
