Newport County Academy Starlet Hailed For On & Off Pitch Achievements

26 February 2018

The on and off the pitch achievements of 11 young footballers has been recognised by League Football Education (LFE).

‘The 11’ acknowledges the football and academic progress of Under-18 players on apprenticeships at current or former English Football League (EFL) clubs - and is also designed to assess other factors including involvement in community or charity-based initiatives.

Newport County AFC is delighted to announce that young striker Modou Touray has been named among the LFE's 11.  Modou is in good company with previous LFE 11 selections including England Under-20 World Cup winners Ademola Lookman (formerly Charlton Athletic), Dael Fry (Middlesbrough), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (formerly Sheffield United) and Lewis Cook (formerly Leeds United) and Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham).

Modou's recent inclusion in the County First Team Squad along with stand out performances for the U19s Wales side and good results in the education programme saw him selected for The 11.

The LFE's Regional Officer for Wales and the South West, Roger Gibbins, said of Modou: “Modou has been in the first-team squad and recently spent 10 days on work experience training with Leicester City, which shows his tremendous progress on the pitch.

“He has also been working really well with his education and is currently working above his target grade. His attitude is great and it’s fantastic to see that he has remained really focused on the whole programme.”

LFE chief executive Alan Sykes added: “The 11 is directly associated with apprentice reviews that are conducted by our regional officer’s throughout the season. It is a great way to highlight the achievements and progression of talented young footballers who apply themselves to all aspects of their apprenticeship.”
