Will Evans | “I know what I can offer…”

16 February 2024

Newport County Striker, Will Evans spoke to the local media about his hopes and expectations in the build-up to Newport’s home tie with Gillingham this coming Saturday (3pm).

Before Tuesday evening, Newport have had a successful spell of late, stringing together an unbeaten streak of seven games and winning their last four of those while conceding only one goal. Unfortunately for the Exiles that unbeaten streak came to an end on Tuesday when they suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Notts County, but this won’t deter the Exiles, who will inevitably be looking to bounce back this Saturday, and Newport's top goal scorer Will Evans will be looking to continue his fine goalscoring form by scoring a fifth successive goal in the league: “I’ve always trusted by ability,” began the Welshman.

“I know what I can offer.

“Last season I scored just two goals in the league, and it’s now taken a drastic turn, but a turn for the good, and as long as I can continue to help push the team up the league, then I’m happy.”

Despite his fantastic form, scoring 22 goals in all competitions, Evans confirmed it’s not a number he tracks throughout the season: “It’s not something I keep count of,” admitted the 26-year old. “I just see it on social media, every time I score, a new stat comes out,” he joked.

Despite admitting he's not one to track his goalscoring progress, Evans is keen to ensure he breaks the 20 league goals milestone, so that he can join the likes of Dom Telford and John Aldridge in being Newport players that have surpassed the impressive milestone: “That is great company,” started the forward.

“I hope that I can get over that 20 [goals] mark, I think it’s a good statement of intent. Hopefully we keep the run of results we’ve had recently up, and that I can keep contributing and I believe we’ll be in a good place, come the end of the season.”

Rather than the conventional targets that strikers often set, Evans shares his wider aims and reflects on his time since joining the club, last summer: “I’ve only been a professional footballer for 18 months now and my original aim was to play as many games as I could, while doing a job for the team.

“This year I wanted to make an impact on the team, make a difference, and just be that reliable and versatile player.

"Of course I’m always happy to do what I can for the team, but now I am in my favoured position, my most effective position and I’m still learning every day.” He concluded.

You can watch the Exiles in action tomorrow afternoon, when they host Gillingham at Rodney Parade. Secure your ticket(s) HERE.
